El PIT is a Sinkhole, or an opening in the ground created by the collapse of the upper part of the cenote due to water erosion.
To access it there are steep stairs that lead to a platform and for those who want, there is a system of pulleys for the equipment that can be used for a fee. The site offers bathrooms, showers and tables where you can set up the equipment. EL PIT is a deep dive so it is best to do it as the first dive of the day when the light is better and the sun's rays illuminate the bottom with wonderful light effects. Taking the wall as a reference at about 15 meters you will find the halocline while at 30 meters there is a layer of hydrogen sulfide with trees that come out of the whitish cloud. Below this layer EL PIT continues in depth reaching a depth of 120 meters. The ceiling has splendid stalactites and in the site you can also see the bones of prehistoric sloths.
Due to its great depth, we recommend this cenote only to our experienced divers.
